The Heart is a Lonely Hunter - Carson McCullers
I first saw The Heart is a Lonely Hunter as a late night television movie when I was a teenager.
I got the chance to revisit it as a book a few years ago when it was selected as a selection for Oprah’s Book Club. This was the first novel for Carson McCullers and she wrote it while in her early twenties.
It’s a story of a deaf man who lives in a 1930’s mill town in Georgia. The story details the joy he finds through his partner of ten years and the despair he experiences when he loses him.
It was a heart wrenching book that showed outcasts of society and how they are forced to function within preconceived limitations. I remember that the movie starred Alan Arkin as the book’s main character, John Singer, but I’m not sure who else was in it.
If you haven’t read it, be prepared to be impressed. Carson McCullers was an overnight literary sensation in her time. And baby, it’s cold outside but the sofa, a cozy throw and a book sounds good, doesn’t it?
Hugs,
