David Copperfield, Magician

I witnessed the magic of David Copperfield years ago in Lake Tahoe.  It was amazing.

The show started with scantily clad assistants folding up plexiglass sheets to form a very large box on the stage.  Then they draped the box with a shimmering cover.  Almost instantaneously they pulled off the cover to reveal David wearing a tuxedo sitting atop a motorcycle.  Now that was magic.

I was super excited to learn that this time David would be performing in my neck of the woods and so I bought tickets immediately.  (Visa people very happy again!)  They dimmed the lights in anticipation as “An Intimate Evening in Grand Illusion” began.  Assistants dressed in normal clothes took the stage and started to put together a plexiglass box and voila, David appeared on a motorcycle!  But this time he was wearing a blue denim shirt that was way too big over a tighter white t-shirt and black pants.  Where did the magic go?

It was still cool but not as cool as the first time because I knew what was coming.  In fact, the more I thought about it, the more it sucked.  So I tried to focus.  Then he brought out the duck.  I’ve seen the duck.  Then he made a tissue dance and turn into a rose, I’ve seen the rose.  But I’ve never seen the denim shirt before – maybe he was going to make his tux magically appear?

I loved his show, I really did.  But I guess maybe I was expecting too much.  I wanted it all to be new and it wasn’t.  I wanted him to be wearing his tux and have a real presence on stage like he did before and he didn’t.

David Copperfield is still an amazing illusionist but I have to admit this.  At close to $100 a ticket for just under an hour’s performance, I still kinda feel let down.  But damn it, I bought the stupid t-shirt anyway.  Because it was pink.  Because it was David.  (Visa people again!)  And maybe, just maybe because I still want to believe in the magic of illusion.
